On January 19, 2025, the Kara Güneş Quintet performed at Bertoni Bottega e Cucina in Castel Bolognese: Özgür Yalçın on voice, santur, guitars, and saz; Vaggelis Merkouris on oud and voice; Claudio Cadei on violin and lavta; Pippi Dimonte on double bass; and Alberto Mammollino on percussion.
The quintet’s sound draws on musicians from different traditions exploring and cross-pollinating the music of the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Near East, combining original compositions by Özgür Yalçın — founder of the historic Turkish band Karagüneş — with reworked traditional material from the wider region.
Fifteen people came, with sixty-six more following along online, and the night closed with an open jam session.
