A workshop for instruments
that don't fit a category.
Tapadum began in the quiet years of the pandemic. With concert halls closed, our founder Ozgur Yalcin — composer and frontman of the Turkish ensemble Kara Gunes — turned away from the stage and toward the workbench. He traveled through Turkey and Iran, spending months with master luthiers in small workshops, and saw what most musicians outside their home country already know: properly-made ethnic instruments are almost impossible to find. Too often, what looks like an oud or a santur is decorative — pretty, but unplayable. Two years later, in 2022, Tapadum opened in Italy. Today our showroom sits in Villa Vezzano, a small village outside Brisighella, while two workshops in Izmir — one for percussion, one for strings — build instruments for players who want more than appearance. If we wouldn't play it ourselves, we don't sell it.
-
01Direct from masters. Our partner luthiers across Turkey, Iran and the Mediterranean send instruments to our showroom in Brisighella. What arrives in Italy comes straight from the workbench — no middlemen.
-
02From our bench to your door. Every piece is inspected and set up by a specialist from our team — luthier, musician, academic — then packed by hand. (We tune them too, but tuning shifts in transit; we leave the final voicing to you.) Free express shipping across Europe, insured and tracked worldwide.
-
03More than a shop The workshop continues. Custom builds in our Izmir workshops. Lessons through Tapadum Academy. Tapadum is the atelier, the store, and the school.
-
04Talk before you buy. Not sure which instrument is right for you? Tell us how you'd play it — our specialists give honest, no-pressure advice based on how you'll actually use it.
Curated by working musicians and luthiers.
Master luthiers in the network.
Learn from working musicians.
Every instrument, played
in our atelier.
Music here doesn't only happen on stage.
Kara Gunes Trio @ Festival
Some of the best music happens when the concert is officially over. After our sunrise set at La Musica nelle Aie 2026, three of us stayed behind with three instruments — a handpan, a violin, and a frame drum — and let the morning carry the conversation. A few unhurried minutes of improvisation, recorded somewhere between the end of one song and the beginning of nothing in particular.
🎶 Musicians Handpan — Ozgur Yalcin (Co-founder of Tapadum) Violin — Claudio Cadeoi Frame drum — Giulia Tripoti
Recorded at La Musica nelle Aie 2026, in the countryside above Faenza, Romagna — a folk and world music festival held every May across the old aie (threshing floors) of these hills. Tapadum kept a stand here through both days of the festival, instruments on display, meeting musicians from across the world-music community.

Do you ship worldwide?
Yes. We ship from Italy to most countries. Shipping is free across the EU and free worldwide on orders over €450; smaller international orders use standard rates. Delivery is 1-2 days in Italy, 1-5 days across the EU, and 1-5 weeks elsewhere depending on destination.
Will I be charged customs or import duties?
Not within the European Union — Tapadum ships from Italy, so EU customers pay no additional customs duties. Outside the EU, customs may apply depending on your country’s import rules and remain the buyer’s responsibility.
Can I return an instrument if it isn't right for me?
Yes. You have 15 days from delivery to return any instrument in its original condition for a full refund. If the return is due to transit damage or our error, we cover return shipping; otherwise return shipping is yours.
Will my instrument arrive in tune?
We tune every instrument before it leaves the workshop, but tuning naturally shifts during shipping — especially over long routes. Most musicians prefer to settle the instrument into their own ear once it arrives. We include setup notes with each piece.
Are your instruments authentic and hand-crafted?
Every instrument in our catalogue is made by hand — most in our own Izmir workshops (percussion and strings), the rest by master luthiers we work with personally across Anatolia, Persia and the Mediterranean. No factory-produced pieces, no white-label imports. Each one is checked by a working musician before it ships.
Can I order a custom-built instrument?
Yes. Our Izmir workshops take on one-off and small-batch custom builds — your wood, your scale, your design idea. We walk you through every step. See our Tapadum Customs page or contact us with your project.
