Ney Anban
The ney anban is the traditional bagpipe of Iran’s Persian Gulf coast — Bushehr, Hormozgan, and the islands of Qeshm and Kish. Unlike Highland or Balkan bagpipes, it carries no drone: a hand-stitched goatskin bag feeds a single blowpipe and a double cane-reed chanter, producing the bright, buzzing, continuous-breath sound at the heart of Bandari folk music. Played at weddings, celebrations, and traditionally by fishermen as “music of work,” the ney anban (also known as the Persian bagpipe) is a rare and distinctive voice in the region’s wind tradition.
