Description

A Silent Oud, Reinterpreted for the Modern Player

The MG-E2 is a silent electric oud crafted by master luthier Mustafa Gezerdag in Tapadum’s İzmir atelier. The term “silent” comes from the Turkish sessiz ud — not because the instrument makes no sound, but because its solid mahogany body produces minimal acoustic output, just like an electric guitar. Plug it in, and a built-in Fishman pick-up brings the full warmth and detail of the oud through your amplifier, headphones, or audio interface.

This makes the MG-E2 a practical choice for apartment practice, late-night sessions, hotel rooms, recording isolation, and any environment where a traditional resonant oud would be too loud. The traditional 58.5 cm Turkish scale and oud-style construction are preserved — only the body cavity is replaced with a quiet, solid form.

Made in Our İzmir Atelier by Mustafa Gezerdag

Mustafa Gezerdag (Mustafa Usta) has been crafting instruments for Tapadum for many years from his workshop in İzmir, Turkey. His electric oud line — including this MG-E2 model — combines traditional Anatolian luthiery with electric-instrument engineering, drawing on decades of experience building both acoustic ouds and modern electrified variants. Every MG-E2 is hand-built in İzmir and hand-tuned in our Brisighella, Italy showroom before dispatch. Browse our Electric Oud collection for other amplified options.

Solid Mahogany Body — Why “Silent”

A traditional oud‘s volume comes from its hollow, deep-bowled soundbox. The MG-E2 replaces this with a solid mahogany body sculpted in an oud-shaped silhouette — no soundbox, no separate top plate, just a single dense piece of wood that anchors the strings and houses the pick-up. Mahogany was chosen for its balanced warmth and tonal density — when amplified through the pick-up, the instrument retains the resonant midrange and depth oud players expect, without acoustic projection into the room.

Result: you can practice oud at full playing intensity in environments where an acoustic oud would not be welcome.

Fishman 301 Pick-up

The integrated Fishman 301 is an active piezoelectric pick-up powered by a 9V battery, widely used in acoustic and folk instruments. It captures string vibration directly from the bridge and translates it into a clean, detailed signal output through a standard 1/4″ jack. Plug it into a guitar amp, an acoustic amp, an audio interface, or a small mixer — the signal is flat and faithful, leaving tone shaping to your downstream EQ or effects.

Note: the MG-E2 does not include a built-in headphone amplifier. For silent practice through headphones, you connect the 1/4″ output to a small headphone amp or audio interface — a common, inexpensive accessory.

Mechanical Guitar Pegs

Traditional friction pegs are replaced with geared mechanical guitar pegs. This is one of the most practical changes on the MG-E2: tuning stability becomes effortless, micro-adjustments are precise, and the instrument holds tune through long sessions and temperature shifts. For players coming from guitar or those new to the oud, the learning curve flattens significantly.

Strings and Tuning

The MG-E2 follows the traditional Turkish oud configuration: 11 strings arranged in 6 courses — a single string for the lowest course, and five doubled courses above. It ships with Kürschner strings, a German specialty manufacturer respected for handmade strings used by professional oud and lute players across Europe. Their tonal clarity and consistent intonation pair naturally with the Fishman pick-up signal, producing a balanced amplified tone.

The standard tuning is D-A-E-B-F#-C# from the lowest course to the highest — identical to a classical acoustic Turkish oud. This preserves your existing technique and repertoire when switching between an acoustic oud and the electric MG-E2.

Who This Oud Is For

This instrument suits oud players in apartment buildings, touring musicians, studio recordists, music school students, and electric or experimental composers exploring fusion contexts where a traditional oud’s acoustic volume becomes a limitation. It is also a strong second oud for performers who want a reliable, low-maintenance instrument for travel and rehearsals. Is the MG-E2 silent oud actually silent?
No — the name describes its low acoustic output, not silence. The term comes from the Turkish "sessiz ud" ("quiet oud"). The MG-E2 has a solid mahogany body instead of a hollow soundbox, so it projects very little sound into the room on its own. To hear it at full volume, you connect it through its built-in Fishman pick-up to an amplifier, audio interface, or headphone setup — similar to how an electric guitar works.
Can I practice this oud in an apartment without disturbing neighbours?
Yes — this is exactly the use case the MG-E2 is built for. Played unplugged, the instrument produces only a faint acoustic murmur. To hear the full oud tone, you plug into headphones or an amplifier, allowing private practice at any volume. Apartment players, late-night practitioners, and touring musicians in hotels are the most common buyers.
Who makes the MG-E2 silent electric oud?
The MG-E2 is hand-built by Mustafa Gezerdag (Mustafa Usta), a Turkish master luthier who has crafted instruments for Tapadum for many years from his workshop in İzmir, Turkey. Each instrument is then hand-tuned in our Brisighella, Italy showroom before being shipped to the customer.
What is the difference between a silent oud and a semi-hollow electric oud?
A semi-hollow electric oud retains a partial resonance chamber and produces some acoustic sound on its own. A silent oud like the MG-E2 has a fully solid body — it relies entirely on its pick-up to be heard. If your priority is quiet practice and recording, the silent oud is the more focused tool; if you want some acoustic feedback when playing unplugged, a semi-hollow design suits better.
How is the MG-E2 tuned, and how many strings does it have?
The MG-E2 follows the traditional Turkish oud configuration: 11 strings arranged in 6 courses (the lowest course is a single string, and the five higher courses are doubled). The standard tuning is D-A-E-B-F#-C# from the lowest to the highest, identical to a classical acoustic Turkish oud. Your existing technique and repertoire carry over directly when switching between an acoustic oud and the electric MG-E2.
