Tapadum’s Strings Curator, Luthier & Musician
Istanbul-based luthier and musician, Sertan Sarioglu builds lavta, guitars of every kind, and frame drums under his own workshop name, Mitre. Over more than a decade at the bench, his craft has expanded from traditional Turkish lutes into a wider range of stringed and percussive instruments — culminating in his own design, the Modern Mediterranean Lavta, a contemporary reimagining of the classical form.
At Tapadum, Sertan leads the strings department as curator, drawing on both maker’s and player’s perspectives to source and shape the instruments we offer. Alongside his work as a luthier, he is an active musician — performing on percussion, ney, and lavta. This double life informs every instrument he builds: each one is tuned by the hands of someone who knows what it feels like to play it, not only to make it.
His approach is grounded in a single principle — to make the next instrument better than the last.
“In making, I have only one principle: to do the best I can, and always to make the next one better — which is why my luckiest customer is the one I built my latest instrument for.”
