Description

The Tribal Kutu Saz is a one-of-a-kind electric box saz from the Caglama Box family, its body covered with an original, hand-drawn tribal motif. Compact, amplified and easy to carry, it brings the microtonal voice of the Anatolian baglama together with a bold piece of graphic folk art — each instrument painted individually, so no two are exactly alike.

Like the rest of the Caglama Box – Kutu Saz line, this caglama is a contemporary Turkish hybrid: a small, box-shaped resonating chamber beneath a full-length fretted neck, built for the stage, the studio and the road.

The Tribal Artwork

What sets this model apart is the artwork on its box body: a hand-drawn tribal composition in terracotta, red and black — a totemic central figure framed by a sun motif, stylised eyes and hands, and a dense mud-cloth border of triangles, zig-zags and geometric symbols. Drawn directly onto the natural wood and sealed for protection, the panel gives the instrument a strong graphic identity while leaving the pale timber to show through as a background.

Materials & One-Piece Construction

The body is shaped from solid, light-toned tonewood with a natural, hand-finished surface. Its neck and body are a single piece (yekpare) of wood, carved from one continuous section with no glued-on or added joint — a construction that removes the usual neck-to-body seam, improving structural stability, tuning reliability and the way vibration travels through the instrument. The instrument measures 77 cm in total length, with a 58 cm string (scale) length.

Electronics & Playing

A magnetic pickup with two onboard controls (volume and tone) lets the Tribal Kutu Saz plug straight into any guitar amplifier or effects chain. Stringing and tuning follow baglama conventions; several tunings are possible, with D–A–D a common choice, and the fretting keeps the microtonal (koma and quarter-tone) voicing of Turkish music intact. It responds equally well to a plectrum, to fingerstyle šelpe technique, or to a standard guitar pick.

Care & Maintenance

Keep the Tribal Kutu Saz in a protective case when it is not in use, and wipe the body and neck with a soft, dry cloth after playing. Because the neck and body are a single piece of wood and the motif is hand-drawn, avoid sudden humidity or temperature swings and keep the instrument out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect both the timber and the artwork.

Worldwide shipping & 15-day return. Each instrument is made to order and tested before it ships from our Brisighella showroom, with a preparation time of 3–10 days.

What makes the Tribal Kutu Saz unique?
Its box body carries an original, hand-drawn tribal motif in terracotta, red and black — a totemic figure framed by a sun, stylised eyes and a geometric mud-cloth border — drawn onto the wood and sealed. Because each one is drawn by hand, no two examples are exactly alike.
What are the dimensions and how is it built?
The instrument measures 77 cm in total length with a 58 cm string (scale) length. Its neck and body are a single piece (yekpare) of solid wood, carved from one continuous section with no glued-on joint, which improves stability, tuning reliability and sustain.
Is it electric, and can I use amplifiers and effects pedals?
Yes. A magnetic pickup with onboard volume and tone controls lets it plug straight into any guitar amplifier or effects chain, so you can shape the sound for stage, studio and travel.
How is the Tribal Kutu Saz tuned?
Tuning follows baglama conventions and several tunings are possible; a common setup is D–A–D. The fretting keeps the microtonal (koma and quarter-tone) voicing of Turkish music, suiting folk, fusion and experimental styles.
How should I care for the artwork?
Keep the instrument in a protective case when not in use, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid sudden humidity or temperature swings. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight so the hand-drawn tribal motif keeps its colour over time.
