Instrument buzzing and slipping pegs can be unsettling when a handmade string instrument is new to you. The useful question is not simply, “Does it make an unusual sound?” It is: “Where does the sound begin, when does it appear, and does anything look structurally different?”
Ouds, baglamas, lavtas, setars, tanboors and related instruments are light wooden structures under string tension. Is a light buzz normal on a new string instrument?

When should you stop playing?
Stop and seek professional help when a sound is accompanied by a visible structural change. Important warning signs include:
- a new crack in the soundboard, bowl, neck or pegbox;
- a bridge lifting, leaning sharply or moving when it should be fixed;
- a neck that appears twisted or newly bowed;
- a peg that is cracked, stuck or requires force;
- a loose brace or object moving inside the body;

Remove tension only if a qualified person advises you to do so for that instrument. Sudden full detuning can create a different problem on instruments with movable bridges or components held in place by string pressure.

- the instrument name and model;
- when it arrived and when the sound began;
- the tuning and the affected string or course;
