Description
This long neck baglama string set holds three complete restrings for the long-neck saz (uzun sap), with seven steel strings in each set. It suits players who change their own strings and like to keep spares ready, from students to working musicians. Compared with our short-neck set, the plain strings are one step heavier: each set has three 0.20 mm and two 0.30 mm plain strings, plus two wound bass strings (bam) of 0.40 mm and 0.50 mm. All 21 strings have loop ends and are made in Turkey.
Gauges and Course Layout
The baglama is strung in three courses, and the chart printed on the pack shows where each gauge goes. The two 0.30 mm strings make up the middle course. The 0.20 mm plain strings go to the upper and bottom courses, and each of these two courses also takes one wound bam: the 0.50 mm bam in the upper course and the 0.40 mm bam in the bottom course.
The pack names the wound strings as white bam (beyaz bam). The plain strings carry the melody, and each bam adds a lower voice to its course. Before you take off the old strings, note how your instrument is set up, because the nut and the bridge are cut for that layout.
Loop Ends and Fitting
Each string ends in a loop. The loop hooks onto the tailpiece at the base of the body, and the other end passes through the tuning peg and is wound on. Change the strings one at a time so that the bridge stays where it is.
New steel strings stretch a little before they hold their pitch. Expect to retune several times during the first sessions after a restring.

What Is Included with the Long Neck Baglama String Set
- Three complete sets of seven strings — 21 strings in total
Who It Is For
This set is for players of the long-neck saz: students who restring often while they learn, teachers who keep spare sets for lessons, and performers who fit new strings before a concert. With three sets in one pack, the next two restrings are already on the shelf.
It is not meant for the short-neck saz (kisa sap), which has a shorter string length; for that instrument, our short-neck baglama strings set uses 0.18 mm and 0.28 mm plain strings. If you prefer ball-end strings, the Volume set for the long-neck saz has the same 0.20 mm and 0.30 mm plain gauges. More strings and parts are in our saz and baglama accessories, and instruments in the baglama and saz collection.
Music and Traditions
The long-neck saz is one of the main instruments of Turkish folk music, played to accompany songs and in ensembles. Its longer neck and string length set it apart from the short-neck saz, and it is played with the tezene, the light plectrum of the baglama. A fresh set of strings brings back the clear attack that this music relies on.
Care and Storage
After playing, wipe the strings with a soft, dry cloth: sweat and moisture tarnish steel over time. Keep the two spare sets in their packaging, somewhere dry, until you fit them.
Change the strings when the tone turns dull, when the instrument stops holding its tuning, or when the wound bam strings show discolouration or rust.
