Udu Drum
The Udu Drum is a clay vessel percussion instrument with deep West African roots, valued for the round, resonant bass that rises from within its hollow ceramic body. It originates among the Igbo people of Nigeria — where the word udu means “vessel” or “pottery” — and began as an everyday water jug that musicians adapted for ceremony and song. Today it belongs equally to traditional hand-percussion and to modern ambient and meditative music.
Every udu drum in this collection is handcrafted at our Tapadum Workshop in İzmir, Türkiye, where Ahmet Tashomcu shapes each ceramic body by hand. The instrument’s voice lives in its internal geometry — the curve of the chamber and the placement of the side opening guide the air within, setting the depth of the bass and the clarity of the overtones. Because every shell is formed by hand, no two drums sound exactly alike. Fired natural clay gives the udu its warm, dry attack and quick decay, a tonal signature no synthetic shell reproduces.
Playing the udu is a dialogue between two voices. Striking and releasing the large side hole draws a soft, breathing bass from the chamber — the character that earns the instrument its “water drum” name — while fingertips tapped across the body add bright, ringing tones and rhythmic accents.
