The Handpan Tapadum Pro – 12 Notes D Hicaz Scale is the widest-range Hicaz instrument in our catalogue: a 12-note handpan with every note on the top playing surface — a central ding ringed by eleven tone fields — tuned to the D Hicaz scale.
Hicaz is defined by the augmented second, the wide step between its second and third degrees that gives the scale its tense, expressive colour. With twelve notes rather than nine, the Tapadum Pro gives that colour more room: enough range for melodic lines, ostinato patterns and chord shapes across the surface, with no notes on the bottom shell.
The instrument is shaped from carefully selected steel, hand-hammered and tuned by experienced makers, and finished in a brushed, natural steel-grey tone. Played with the fingers and the heels of the palms, it answers with deep, warm bass from the ding, clear singing highs and a long sustain rich in harmonics.

Why the D Hicaz Scale?
The Hicaz scale (also written Hijaz) takes its sound from the Hicaz maqam of Turkish, Arabic and Persian classical music, and it is closely related to the Phrygian dominant scale heard in Greek and Balkan music. Where D Kurd is calm and open, D Hicaz is dramatic and expressive. It has more character than the standard beginner scales, yet it stays intuitive and rewarding, and lets players build deeply expressive phrases from their first sessions.

Care & Maintenance
Store the handpan in a dry place, away from humidity and extreme temperatures, and wipe it gently with a soft, non-abrasive cloth after each use. Every 20 days, apply a light layer of baby oil or coconut oil with a soft, scratch-free cloth to protect the surface and prevent oxidation. Keep it in its case when travelling and avoid knocks or contact with hard, sharp objects.
