Description

The Handpan Tapadum – 9 Notes D Kurd (D Minor) is our own-brand entry-level handpan. It is a simple, honest first instrument: nine notes in the D Kurd (D minor) scale, made to be a genuinely playable way to start.

Think of it as a starter instrument for your first years of playing. It is a real handpan to learn on and enjoy every day, and when you are ready you can move up to a professional-grade instrument. For a fuller-bodied handpan in the same scale, see our Handpan Tapadum Pro.

The Tapadum is made from coated steel with a thin protective lacquer finish. It is not stainless steel. The finish and patterned surface help protect the metal, but it is not rust-proof: left damp, or stored for long periods in humid or coastal air, it will eventually show rust. With a little regular care it stays in good shape for years (see Care & Maintenance below).

In D minor it has a warm, mellow voice: a soft low doum in the middle with eight tone fields around it. Like every handpan, it is made from two steel shells joined at the rim, and you play it with your fingers and the heels of your palms.

Why the D Kurd Scale?

D Kurd is the most popular handpan scale and the easiest for new players. The notes always sit well together, so you can improvise from the first day. It is the scale most used for sound healing, yoga, meditation, and calm, ambient playing. If this is your first handpan, it is a good place to start.

Who It Is For

It suits beginners taking their first steps, students, and sound therapists or yoga teachers who want a real D Kurd handpan without a professional price tag. It is a simple entry into our handpan collection. You can also browse our wider sound healing instruments range to compare.

Care & Maintenance

Because this is coated steel and not stainless, a little routine care keeps it in good condition. Wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth after every session to remove moisture and skin oils. Apply a thin layer of handpan oil (such as Froglube or a similar protectant) every few weeks, and more often in humid or coastal climates. Keep it out of direct sun and away from strong heat, which can pull the notes out of tune, and always store and carry it in a padded case. A dedicated safety bag or hard cargo case is available separately.

Every Tapadum handpan is checked and tuned to 440 Hz before it ships. Worldwide shipping & 15-day return. Contact our team if you would like help choosing your scale.

Is the Handpan Tapadum a good first handpan?
Yes. It is our own-brand entry-level handpan, made as a genuine, playable starter instrument. Many players use a handpan like this for their first years, then move up to a professional-grade instrument once they know the scale and technique they want. It plays the beginner-friendly 9-note D Kurd (D minor) scale and is tuned to 440 Hz.
Is the D Kurd scale good for beginners?
D Kurd (D minor) is the most popular and most beginner-friendly handpan scale. The nine notes sit well together, so you can improvise from the first day, while the scale still has the depth to carry more serious playing later.
Does the Handpan Tapadum rust, and how do I care for it?
It is coated steel with a protective lacquer finish, not stainless steel, so it is not rust-proof. Left damp, or stored in humid or coastal air, it can rust over time. Simple care prevents this: wipe it with a dry cloth after playing, apply a thin coat of handpan oil every few weeks, and keep it dry in a padded case.
What is the Handpan Tapadum made of, and what is included?
It is a 9-note D Kurd handpan made from coated steel with a protective lacquer finish (not stainless), tuned to 440 Hz. A padded safety bag and a hard cargo case are available separately for transport and protection.
How big and heavy is the Handpan Tapadum?
It measures 58 cm in diameter and 28 cm in height and weighs about 4.3 kg — a full-size handpan that is still light enough to carry to lessons and sessions in a padded case.
