Description
The lotus mandala steel tongue drum turns a calm, meditative instrument into a piece you also want to look at. This 10-note steel tongue drum is tuned in D Kurd (D minor) — the same gentle, slightly melancholic scale at the heart of the handpan world — and its bronze face is etched with a blooming, layered lotus mandala that draws the eye toward the centre as the sound draws the ear inward.
Materials & body
The shell is cut from resonant steel and given a warm antique-bronze finish under a protective coating, so the surface keeps its glow with very little care. Across the top, a hand-detailed lotus mandala opens outward in concentric petals from a single still point — the engraving is part of the metal itself, not a sticker or print, so it will not peel or fade with playing.
The tongues & tuning
Ten tuned tongues are cut into the playing surface and voiced in D Kurd (D minor), a forgiving scale where every tongue sits in harmony with the others — there are no “wrong” notes, which is exactly why it suits beginners and sound-healing work. Struck with the mallets or played with bare fingers, each tongue gives a clean, sustained tone with a soft, bell-like decay.
Lotus mandala & symbolism
The lotus is one of the oldest symbols of growth and clarity — a flower that rises from still water and opens into perfect symmetry. As a mandala, that opening becomes a focus point for the eye in meditation, mirroring the way the drum’s slow tones settle the mind. It makes this model a natural fit as a mindful gift or a centrepiece for a meditation, yoga, or therapy space. For a sharper, more architectural feel, see the companion Geometric Mandala tongue drum — same scale, very different visual language.
