Description
The Turkish clay darbuka is the bright, articulate lead voice of the goblet-drum family — a slim, hand-shaped clay drum built for melody-line rhythm, fast finger technique, and solo improvisation. This model pairs a crisp, ringing tone with a hand-painted cream-and-terracotta body and incised geometric banding, in the Turkish solo darbuka tradition. It is handcrafted in İzmir by Ahmet Tashomcu and Mehmet Nihat San, and belongs to our clay darbuka collection.
Hand-Painted Cream & Terracotta Clay Body
The shell is shaped from high-fired clay and finished in a striking two-tone scheme — a warm reddish-brown shoulder above a cream-white waist and foot, ringed with hand-painted terracotta banding of vertical lines, columns, and small lozenge accents. The tall, slender goblet profile narrows sharply at the waist and flares to a painted foot, the elegant silhouette of the Turkish solo darbuka. Because each drum is painted by hand, the banding carries small variations unique to your instrument.
20 cm Goatskin Head & Tuning Light System
A natural goatskin head, 20 cm across, is fitted over a black collar and laced with a white cord net across the shoulder. The tight, responsive skin gives a bright, cutting tek and a clear doum, ideal for the crisp attack solo playing demands. An integrated Tuning Light System — an internal, dimmer-controlled lamp — gently warms the head from the inside to hold a stable pitch through practice and performance, without external heat.

Who This Turkish Clay Darbuka Is For
This is a lead and solo instrument — the voice that carries the melody line above the ensemble. Its light 4.4 kg body and quick, focused head suit players who value fast split-finger technique and clean ornamentation, from students building solo skills to performers who want a clay darbuka with a bright, woody ring. Pair it with a bass Egyptian clay darbuka for a full section, or keep it as a stand-alone solo drum.
Music Genres & Traditions
The solo clay darbuka carries the lead in Turkish and Ottoman rhythms — düyek, çiftetelli, and karşılama — and appears across Arabic, Levantine, and Balkan percussion, driving taqsim improvisation and fast dance grooves. You can read more about the wider family on the goblet drum reference. Compare it with our solo terracotta darbuka or clay doumbek to find your voice.
Care & Maintenance
Store the drum in moderate humidity (45–55%) and wipe the body with a dry, soft cloth. Warm the head only with the Tuning Light System, never with an open flame or heat gun. Transport it in the included padded gig bag, and keep the painted body away from hard knocks and abrasion. Browse the full darbuka and percussions ranges to complete your setup.
