Description
The Turkish Lavta — Light of Tradition III from Tapadum is a handcrafted Ottoman lute from our signature series, carrying forward centuries of Anatolian lutherie with a balance of traditional craftsmanship and refined tonal character. Built for performing musicians and serious students of Turkish classical music, the Lavta III in the Light of Tradition line offers the depth, responsiveness, and authenticity expected of a premium performance instrument.
Staved Hardwood Bowl
The bowl is assembled from carefully matched hardwood ribs, each selected for grain consistency and acoustic properties before being glued in the traditional Turkish staved construction. The pear-shaped profile and multi-rib design create a focused resonant chamber that gives the lavta its agile, articulate voice — smaller and brighter than an oud, tuned for cutting through ensembles and complementing vocal performance.
Spruce Soundboard & Classical Rosette
The flat soundboard is hand-selected spruce, chosen for its grain clarity and responsive tap tone. A traditional hand-cut rosette centers the soundboard, its geometric pattern drawn from classical Ottoman design vocabulary. Internal bracing is calibrated to deliver projection without losing the warmth expected from a classical lavta.
Fretted Neck with Movable Gut Frets
The fingerboard uses movable gut frets tied in the traditional Turkish manner. This fret system is essential for playing Turkish maqam — the gut loops can be slid along the neck to adjust intonation for specific modes, something that fixed metal frets cannot accommodate. The neck is shaped for comfortable left-hand position and smooth position shifts.

Who This Lavta Is For
The Light of Tradition III suits intermediate to advanced players performing Turkish classical music, Ottoman court repertoire, or Greek rebetiko. It’s an excellent choice for conservatory students moving past beginner instruments, gigging musicians who need reliable tone night after night, and oud players adding the lavta’s distinctive voice to their working setup. The instrument also serves recording musicians who need a lavta that captures well in studio environments.
Music Genres & Traditions
The lavta is a defining voice in Ottoman classical music, Turkish art music (Türk sanat müziği), Byzantine-inflected repertoire, and Greek rebetiko. Its brighter tone compared to the oud suits vocal accompaniment and ensemble textures where a darker instrument would sit too low. Contemporary applications include Mediterranean fusion, film scoring, and Sephardic music projects. Browse the full string instrument range at Tapadum for companion instruments.
Care & Maintenance
Store in a hard case at 45–55% humidity — wooden lutes are humidity-sensitive and can crack or warp in extreme conditions. Wipe strings and soundboard with a dry cloth after playing. Retie loose gut frets as they shift over time; check intonation monthly. Friction pegs occasionally need peg dope to turn smoothly. Loosen strings slightly during long storage periods to ease soundboard stress.
