Description

The Handpan Melodinng – 12 Notes in D Kurd is the all-top, full-melody member of our premium Melodinng line — a 12-note handpan in D Kurd (D minor) where every note sits on the upper playing surface for an even, articulate, fast-responding voice. It bridges our meditative Melodinng 9-note D Kurd and the bass-extended 15-note D Kurd, giving you a wider melodic range without the deep bottom-shell bass.

Like every handpan, it is formed from two domed shells of premium stainless steel joined at the rim. The top shell carries a central doum note ringed by eleven hand-hammered tone fields, each tuned to its fundamental, octave and compound fifth; the lower shell holds the gu port that shapes the instrument’s resonance. Stainless steel keeps the surface naturally rust-resistant and stable as conditions change, so the tuning holds from the studio to the stage.

Playing a 12-note handpan in D Kurd

The D Kurd scale — D minor with a natural seventh — is the world’s most-played handpan scale, loved for its calm, forgiving, meditative character. On this 12-note handpan in D Kurd, the same twelve notes that form the top surface of our 15-note Melodinng are voiced as a complete instrument in their own right: a bright, focused top end with enough range for full melodies, ostinatos and layered composition, all within easy reach of the hands.

A bright, even handpan voice

With all twelve notes on the top shell, the 12-note Melodinng speaks with a clear attack and quick note-to-note response. Each field is tuned so its octave and compound fifth bloom over the fundamental, giving the shimmering, sustained overtone halo handpans are loved for. The result is a focused, melodic top end — articulate enough for fast playing and intricate phrasing, yet warm and forgiving enough to drift into long, meditative resonance for sound therapy and mindfulness practice.

Who it is for

This is the choice for players who have outgrown a 9-note handpan and want more melodic range, yet prefer every note on the playing surface rather than the deep bottom-shell bass of the 15-note model. Its even, articulate response suits daily practice, busking, stage performance and studio recording, while its meditative D Kurd voice is equally at home in sound healing, yoga and ambient work. It sits within our wider sound healing instruments family; to compare scales and price points, browse the full handpan collection.

Care, case and what is included

Premium stainless steel is forgiving, but a little care preserves its tone. Wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth after playing and apply a light handpan oil occasionally, especially in humid or coastal climates. Keep it out of direct sun and intense heat, and store and travel with it in a padded case. This Melodinng ships with a protective hard cargo case included — a €219 value — so the instrument is ready to travel from the day it arrives.

Every Melodinng is checked for tuning accuracy, sustain and finish at our Brisighella, Italy showroom before it ships. Worldwide shipping & 15-day return.

How is the 12-note Melodinng different from the 9-note and 15-note?
It keeps all twelve notes on the top playing surface, so it offers more melodic range than the 9-note D Kurd while staying lighter and brighter than the 15-note, which adds three deep bass notes tuned into the bottom shell. It is the all-top, full-melody option in the Melodinng line.
Why are all the notes on the top, with no bottom bass notes?
An all-top layout gives an even, articulate response and a focused top end that is fast to play and easy to learn across the surface. Players who want a deep bass register can instead choose the 15-note Melodinng, which tunes three bass notes into the lower shell.
Is the 12-note D Kurd suitable for beginners?
The D Kurd scale is calm and forgiving, which makes it beginner-friendly, and the all-top layout keeps every note within easy reach. Complete beginners often start on a 9-note and move up, but a motivated beginner can start here and grow into the extra range.
What is the Handpan Melodinng made of, and does it rust?
It is built from premium stainless steel, which is naturally rust-resistant and stable across changing conditions. Wipe it dry after playing and apply a light handpan oil occasionally, more often in humid or coastal climates.
How big and heavy is it, and what is included?
It measures 58 cm in diameter and 28 cm in height and weighs about 4.3 kg, tuned to 440 Hz. A protective hard cargo case is included so it is ready to travel, and its warm D Kurd voice makes it well suited to sound healing, meditation and melodic performance.
