Description
Professional Walnut Tombak by Rahimi — A Persian Zarb
The walnut tombak by Rahimi is a hand-built Persian zarb from the Isfahan workshop of a maker with some twenty-eight years at the bench. Graded four mohr — four of the maker’s burned seals — it sits at the professional end of the range, the goblet drum that drives Persian classical and folk rhythm through its deep tom and bright bak.
Walnut Body, Matte Finish
The shell is turned from a single piece of aged walnut (gerdoo), the dense, warm-toned hardwood Iranian makers prize for its mature, deep, ringing voice and long sustain. Rahimi finishes it in a matte natural surface rather than high gloss — a quieter, more traditional look that keeps the grain open to the eye and hand.
Calfskin Head & Voice
The 27 cm playing surface is a natural calfskin head, bound to the shell in the traditional way. Calfskin gives the tombak a warm, supple attack and a wide tonal range — a ringing tek at the rim, a round, resonant tom at the centre, and the rapid riz finger-rolls the repertoire is built on. As a natural membrane it answers to the room, the living quality Persian players prize.

Who It’s For
At 27 cm across, 48 cm tall and 3.4 kg, this is a comfortably sized concert tombak — lighter than many full-scale drums — for the intermediate to professional player who wants a warm, traditional walnut voice and an understated, matte look for Persian classical and folk playing.
In the Persian Repertoire
The tombak anchors the Persian dastgāh tradition, driving radif performance and accompanying the tar, setar and santur. It carries equally into folk and contemporary, cross-cultural playing. Browse the wider Persian tombak range for other makers, woods and sizes.
Care & Maintenance
Keep the calfskin head away from direct heat and sudden humidity changes, and let the drum settle into a new room before playing. Wipe the matte walnut shell with a dry, soft cloth — it needs no polish. There is nothing to tune; a tombak’s voice lives in the skin and the room. Stored well, a hand-made drum like this matures in tone for years.
