Description

The colorful clay darbuka is a solo goblet drum that pairs a traditional fired-clay voice with a vivid, one-of-a-kind dyed head. This model has a warm terracotta clay body wrapped in bold black geometric banding, topped with a natural goatskin head dyed in a multicolour tie-dye pattern — a bright, articulate solo drum that doubles as a display piece. It is handcrafted in İzmir by Ahmet Tashomcu and Mehmet Nihat San, and belongs to our clay darbuka collection.

Terracotta Clay Body & Black Geometric Banding

The shell is shaped from high-fired clay in its natural warm terracotta tone, then decorated with a band of bold black geometric motifs around the flared foot — rows of triangles, chevrons, and vertical bars in a tribal Anatolian style. The wide bell-shaped bowl narrows to a slim neck and opens again at the base, a comfortable solo silhouette. Because each drum is decorated by hand, the banding carries small variations unique to your instrument.

Vivid Dyed Goatskin Head & Tuning Light System

A natural goatskin head, 23 cm across, is dyed in a spray-and-marble tie-dye pattern of greens, pinks, yellows, and reds — no two are ever identical. Fitted over a black collar and laced with a black cord net, the responsive skin gives a bright, cutting tek and a clear doum. An integrated Tuning Light System — an internal, dimmer-controlled lamp — gently warms the head from the inside to hold a stable pitch through practice and performance, without external heat.

Who This Colorful Clay Darbuka Is For

This is a lead and solo instrument with a personality all its own — the drum that carries the melody line and draws the eye on stage. Its light 4.9 kg body and quick, focused head suit players who value clean ornamentation and fast finger technique, from students to performers who want a clay darbuka that stands out visually as much as it sounds. Pair it with a Turkish clay darbuka or a bass Egyptian clay darbuka to build a full section.

Music Genres & Traditions

The solo clay darbuka carries the lead in Turkish, Arabic, and Levantine rhythms — from çiftetelli and karşılama to maqsum and baladi — driving taqsim improvisation and fast dance grooves. You can read more about the wider family on the goblet drum reference. Compare it with our solo terracotta darbuka to find your voice.

Care & Maintenance

Store the drum in moderate humidity (45–55%) and wipe the body with a dry, soft cloth. Warm the head only with the Tuning Light System, never with an open flame or heat gun, and keep the dyed skin out of prolonged direct sun to protect its colours. Transport it in the included padded gig bag, and keep the painted base away from hard knocks. Browse the full darbuka and percussions ranges to complete your setup.

What is a colorful clay darbuka?
It is a solo goblet drum, or darbuka, with a high-fired clay body and a vividly dyed natural goatskin head. The clay shell gives a warm, woody tone while the multicolour head makes it a striking stage and display instrument.
Is the colorful head natural skin or synthetic?
It is a natural goatskin head dyed in a multicolour tie-dye pattern, so every drum's colouring is unique. It plays like any natural-skin head and responds to the Tuning Light System for tuning.
What is the Tuning Light System?
An internal, dimmer-controlled lamp that gently warms the goatskin head from inside to raise and hold its pitch. It lets you tune the drum without a heat gun or open flame, keeping the tone stable through a session.
Is the clay body durable?
The shell is high-fired clay with fired-on black banding and is stable in normal use. The main risk is a hard impact, which the included padded gig bag helps prevent, and the dyed head should be kept out of prolonged direct sun to protect its colours.
What music is a colorful clay darbuka used for?
It carries the lead in Turkish, Arabic, and Levantine rhythms such as ciftetelli, karsilama, maqsum, and baladi, driving taqsim improvisation and fast dance grooves, usually as the solo voice of the ensemble.
