The Handpan Tapadum Pro – 9 Notes D Hicaz Scale brings the expressive colour of the Hicaz maqam to the compact, intuitive layout of a 9-note handpan. Tuned to 440 Hz, it combines a central D3 doum with eight surrounding tone fields, giving modal musicians, composers, and sound practitioners a focused instrument with a distinctive voice.
Scale & Sound Character
D Hicaz is recognised by the augmented-second interval at the heart of the scale. This wider step gives the instrument its characteristic tension and expressive pull: more dramatic than D Kurd, yet still natural to explore through repeating patterns, melodic phrases, and improvisation.
The note layout is D3 · A3, C4, D4, D♯4, F♯4, G4, A4, C5. The low D3 doum anchors the instrument, while the eight tone fields move from warm mid-range notes to a clear C5 at the top of the layout. The scale is well suited to modal and maqam-inspired playing, ambient composition, sound sessions, and solo performance.

The shell is shaped from stainless steel, chosen for its clear response, long sustain, and natural resistance to corrosion. Each tone field is individually tuned and checked for balance, response, and clean resonance before the instrument leaves our workshop.
A woven handpan belt wraps around the rim, adding grip and protection where the two shells meet. The instrument is supplied with a hard case for safer transport and storage.

Care & Maintenance
Keep the handpan in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and sudden temperature changes. Wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth after playing to remove moisture and skin oils. Apply a light coat of protective handpan oil every 15 to 20 days, and always transport the instrument in its hard case to protect the tuning and finish.
