Description
The Handpan Tapadum – 9 Notes D Kurd is our own-brand handpan, built around the most widely played handpan scale and stamped with the Tapadum logo. Where our other handpan lines are instruments we select from trusted makers, this D Kurd handpan is Tapadum’s own voice in D minor — the meditative companion to our signature Tapadum Pro in Hicaz. Nine notes, raw stainless steel, and a warm, contemplative tone that opens easily under the hands.

This handpan is shaped from raw stainless steel, left untreated rather than nitrided. Stainless steel gives a bright, clear attack and a long, singing sustain, while its natural chromium content makes it far more rust-resistant than carbon-steel handpans. The result is an open, shimmering voice with a glassy top end over a grounded low doum — equally at home in a quiet room or a live set.
Like every handpan, it is formed from two domed steel shells joined at the rim. The top shell carries the playing surface: a central low note — the doum (or ding) — ringed by eight concave tone fields, each tuned with its fundamental, octave, and fifth sounding together. The bottom shell holds the gu port that releases the bass and shapes its deep, breathing resonance. Played with the fingers and the heels of the palms, it answers with a layered, sustained tone.
Why the D Kurd Scale?
D Kurd — D minor with a natural seventh — is the most popular handpan scale in the world, and the most forgiving for new players: its contemplative, Phrygian-leaning character means the notes always sit well together, so you can improvise freely from the first day. It is the scale most associated with sound healing, yoga, meditation, and ambient music, yet it has the depth to carry serious composition. If this is your first handpan, D Kurd is the most rewarding place to start; if you already play, it stays the scale you reach for when you want space and calm.
Who the Handpan Tapadum D Kurd Is For
It suits beginners taking their first steps, sound therapists and yoga teachers building a practice, buskers and stage players who want a dependable D minor voice, and anyone drawn to the meditative side of percussion. In our range it sits as the own-brand D Kurd — a natural step up from the entry-level Voice Sky and Arsha, and the D minor counterpart to the professional Tapadum Pro Hicaz line. Care & Maintenance
Because the steel is raw rather than coated, a little routine care keeps it singing. Wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth after every session to clear moisture and skin oils, and apply a thin layer of handpan oil — such as Froglube or a similar protectant — every few weeks, more often in humid or coastal climates. Keep it out of direct sun and away from extreme heat, which can pull the notes out of tune, and always store and travel with it in a padded case. A dedicated safety bag or hard cargo case is available for everyday protection.
Every Tapadum handpan is checked and tuned to 440 Hz before it ships. Free Shipping & 15-day return apply across the EU — reach out to our team if you would like help choosing your scale.
