Description

The Handpan Melodinng – 9 Notes in D Hicaz brings the expressive, oriental voice of the Hicaz scale to our premium Melodinng handpan line. Where the meditative D Kurd Melodinng speaks in calm D minor, this D Hicaz handpan carries the dramatic colour of Turkish, Arabic, and Persian modal music — crafted in premium stainless steel for a warm, resonant, long-singing tone.

Made from premium stainless steel, the Melodinng is naturally rust-resistant and stable across changing conditions, with a bright attack and a deep, sustained resonance. The steel gives a clear, shimmering top end over a grounded low doum — a tonal balance that serves both meditative playing and expressive modal melody.

The instrument is formed from two domed steel shells joined at the rim. The upper shell holds a central low note — the doum — surrounded by eight hand-tuned tone fields, while the lower shell carries the gu opening that releases the bass. Played with the fingers and the heels of the palms, a handpan answers with overlapping, sustained tones that layer naturally into melody and drone.

Why the D Hicaz Scale?

The Hicaz scale (also written Hijaz) is defined by the augmented second at its heart — the unmistakable interval of the Hicaz maqam that runs through Turkish, Arabic, and Persian classical music. Where the meditative D Kurd is calm and open, D Hicaz is expressive and dramatic, moving easily from oriental modal melody to deep, ceremonial atmosphere. It complements Turkish roman, Egyptian maqsoum, and Arabic takht ensembles, and rewards players who want to improvise with an Eastern voice — while its colour also adds depth to sound healing and meditation.

The Melodinng Handpan in D Hicaz

Within our range, the Handpan Melodinng in D Hicaz is the premium, sound-healing-grade choice for players drawn to the Eastern modal sound. It is the Hicaz counterpart to the meditative Melodinng D Kurd, and a more sound-healing-oriented alternative to our in-house Tapadum Pro Hicaz signature line. It suits sound therapists, world and modal musicians, and players ready to move beyond the most common handpan scale. Care & Maintenance

Premium stainless steel keeps the Melodinng naturally rust-resistant and forgiving, but a little care preserves its tone. Wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth after playing to remove moisture and skin oils, and apply a light handpan oil occasionally, especially in humid or coastal climates. Keep it out of direct sun and intense heat, which can affect tuning, and always store and travel with it in a padded case — a safety bag or hard cargo case is available.

Every Tapadum handpan is checked and tuned to 440 Hz before it ships. Free Shipping & 15-day return apply across the EU — reach out if you would like help choosing between the meditative D Kurd and the expressive D Hicaz.

How does the D Hicaz scale differ from D Kurd?
D Kurd (D minor) is calm and meditative, while D Hicaz, with its augmented second, is expressive and oriental — the unmistakable sound of Turkish, Arabic, and Persian modal music. Choose D Kurd for open, contemplative play and D Hicaz for dramatic, Eastern colour.
Is a D Hicaz handpan suitable for beginners?
Yes. Beginners can enjoy it from the first day, although its augmented-second character is more dramatic than D Kurd. Modal, world, and Eastern-music players find D Hicaz especially rewarding.
What is the Handpan Melodinng made of, and does it rust?
It is built from premium stainless steel, which is naturally rust-resistant and stable across changing conditions. Wipe it dry after playing and apply a light handpan oil occasionally, more often in humid or coastal climates.
How big and heavy is the Handpan Melodinng D Hicaz?
It measures 58 cm in diameter and 28 cm in height and weighs about 4.3 kg — a full-size handpan that is still light enough to carry to lessons, sessions, and the stage in a padded case.
Can I use it for both sound healing and world music?
Yes. The Hicaz colour suits oriental and modal repertoire as well as sound healing, yoga, and meditation, making it a versatile choice for therapists and performing musicians alike.
